Tireless Phoenix unable to recapture form

-

It was another night of dubious decisions for the Wellington Phoenix, as they succumbed to a 2-1 away defeat to Melbourne City at AAMI Park in Melbourne last night.

Not for the first time this season the Wellington Phoenix have seen tight decisions go against them.

A contentious Bruno Fornaroli penalty late in the second half was enough to steal the win for the home side, who had dominated for much of the game.

Fornaroli was brought down by Italian import Marco Rossi, though replays would go to show there was perhaps little in it.

With both players appearing to be holding onto each other as the ball was flung into the box, the decision reflected harshly on the defender who has been a standout performer in the A-League this season.

It proved to be the games defining moment.

Although the Phoenix faithful could feel hard done by, City fans could feel as though parity was restored.

Roy Krishna’s equalizing goal came from a penalty decision that could have gone either way after Kosta Barbarouses had been taken down under minimal contact by the defender.

City were lucky to escape with the 3 points, though little could argue that it was not deserved.

The Phoenix struggled to create chances throughout the match, and showed little resemblance to the side that had found consecutive 2-0 wins in the lead up to the match.

It had been three weeks since Wellington’s international players had been involved in A-League action.

The extended break appeared to do the players no favours in their search for a win.

Star players Kosta Barbarouses and captain Andrew Durante noticeably struggled to match the pace of the game and were it not for the heroics of Goalkeeper Glen Moss, the game could have been dead and buried long before the half.

Moss has been in terrific form in the early weeks of the season and it wasn’t the first time that he has had to save the ‘Nix blushes early in the season, nor was it the first time that the Phoenix have been on the wrong side of refereeing decisions this season.

Innumerable wrong offside decisions have marred their tough start to the season.

It is a trend that Ernie Merrick would love to see the back of as his Phoenix side look to recapture form.
