Nix new boys make the difference

-

It has been a largely disappointing start to life for many of new faces at the Wellington Phoenix.

After last night’s 3-0 triumph over the Central Coast Mariners it seems that we are finally starting to see the sort of performances that warranted Ernie Merrick’s off season Australian invasion.

A large overhaul in the winter saw some new faces come into the squad with players Adam Parkhouse and Jacob Tratt all signed from the National Premier League.

Though there were initial doubts as to the ability of these players to make the step up to A-League level, the win went a long way to proving doubters wrong.

Tratt has so far turned in some impressive performances since getting his chance to pull on a ‘Nix shirt.

Largely overlooked in the opening weeks of the season, Tratt has proved a valuable option at right back, his tireless running and relentless tackling giving the appearance of a seasoned pro.

On the opposite flank Parkhouse took his first real step forward last night.

After early season struggles the striker by trade looked calm and composed in the left back position, his willingness to get forward provided fantastic support for Krishna who has often looked isolated at times this season on the left wing.

Although it is expected that the injured Tom Doyle will reclaim his spot upon his return, Parkhouse proved last night that he has more than enough potential to be a capable deputy.

Its these sorts of performances that hint at the exciting potential present at the Phoenix

Ernie Merrick highlighted how the strong squad he built should have been generating better performances in his final weeks at the club. Perhaps this is the side of the ‘Nix fans will become accustomed to over the coming weeks.

Whether they have the stamina to maintain momentum is unknown, for now however, the long road to the finals looks a little bit shorter.
