Glory leapfrog Brisbane in feisty contest with Wanderers

-

Perth Glory have moved to third on the Hyundai A-League ladder after convincingly defeating Western Sydney Wanderers 2-0 at NIB Stadium in Perth.

Goals to Chris Harold and Joel Chianese ensured Perth took their chance to leapfrog Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City after suffering home losses to Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix respectively.

An early 7th minute grapple between Liam Reddy and Scott Neville set the tone for what eventuated into a feisty contest between the two sides.

Perth had two open goal opportunities within the first 20 minutes of the match, however Adam Taggart and Rostyn Griffiths failed to convert either effort.

Wanderers’ winger Terry Antonis had the visitor’s best look in the first half, but could only smash his 25-yard free kick into the woodwork.

The longer the first half progressed the more Perth asserted themselves on the match and nearly took the lead in the 40th minute, but for a superb Vedran Janjetovic save.

Andy Keogh cleverly lobbed a through ball to Rhys Williams who controlled on his chest and found a sprinting Taggart, however the Glory man couldn’t break the deadlock.

Perth weren’t made to wait much longer and took the lead through Harold on the stroke of half time.

Diego Castro’s inch-perfect free kick fell to the waiting Harold on the edge of the 18-yard box and the Glory winger calmly volleyed home past a scrambling Janjetovic.

Perth entered the halftime interval with a valuable 1-0 lead.

The humidity in Perth seemed to affect the early stages of the second half as both sides opted to sit in deeper positions.

Perth were able to continue their dominance nonetheless with the Wanderers’ finding it incredibly difficult to break down the Glory side.

Brendon Santalab had the visitors only genuine chance of the second half in the 75th minute however his well hit effort was smartly saved by Glory ‘keeper Reddy.

Castro’s brilliance proved to be the catalyst for the Glory once again and the Spaniard set up Joel Chianese’s clincher in the 95th minute.

After an extended run of passing amongst the Glory players, Castro took the ball inside the box and went past multiple Western Sydney players.

Chianese timed his near post run to perfection and connected with Castro’s cross for a simple tap in, sealing the game in style.

Perth will travel to QBE Stadium next week to face Wellington Phoenix whilst Western Sydney travel to China to face Shanghai East Asia in their second Asian Champions League group stage match.
