Three years since their last Derby win, Western Sydney Wanderers ended the drought with a thrilling 1-0 over a previously undefeated Sydney FC.

After Brendon Santalab had put the red and black ahead in the first half, Tony Popovic’s side held on for an important victory.

“It’s been a long time since we won a derby and it’s good to send the fans home happy,” Popovic said post game.

“In all aspects of the game we more than matched Sydney. We showed tonight we’re a very good team which I knew we were.”

Having always backed his team’s performances the result was long overdue for Popovic.

“I’ve always had belief in my players and tonight they showed how good they are,” he said.

Despite a promising performance and result Popovic wasn’t getting carried away.

“There’s a lot of work ahead. It’d be nice if this was nine or ten points for a game like that but it’s not, it’s three points and if we’re not up to scratch next week in Perth we won’t win and then we’re battling again,” he said.

“Tomorrow we’ve got a training session and tomorrow this is over; we need to move on.”

Graham Arnold will also be looking to move on from his side’s first A-League defeat of the season.

Though a tough result to take, Arnold was pleased with how his team played.

“I thought we were fantastic today, I thought we had enough chances to win three games. Vukovic only had to make one or two saves and Janjetovic was much busier,” he said.

“It was just one of those days where the ball just wouldn’t go into the back of net.

Vedran didn’t really save them, they hit him.”

With multiple penalty appeals waved away during the game, Arnold admitted his side didn’t get the rub of the green on the night.

“Other weeks we’ve had the bounce of the ball and it’s bounced good for us, other days you get decisions from the referees and other days you don’t and that’s the way it is.

And today it wasn’t ours,” he said.

Much like Popovic, Arnold doesn’t plan on dwelling on the result too much however with a clear goal in mind despite his side’s undefeated tag now gone.

“The main focus for myself and the boys is to move on and rebound straight away,” he said.

“Our aim is to be the best team in A-League history and we’re still in a great position for that. “
