Wanderers end Sydney FC’s undefeated run

-

Western Sydney Wanderers have ended their derby drought handing the previously undefeated Sydney FC a 1-0 defeat at ANZ Stadium.

Though looking vulnerable early, the Wanderers had the first clear chance of the match with Jaushua Sotirio fed through on goal only to have his low effort saved well by Daniel Vukovic in the fourth minute.

Despite this early scare, Sydney FC were looking sharp with Vedran Janjetovic doing very well to tip an Alex Brosque effort over the crossbar before Bobo pulled his shot over the bar in the 19 minute.

Western Sydney may have been vulnerable at the back but they were looking dangerous in attack with a Martinez shot deflected wide in the 25th minute before Brendon Santalab gave the red and black a surprise lead. The striker showing great composure to turn on the ball inside the box after a Mitch Nichols pass and power a low shot past Vukovic a minute later.

In what became a much tighter first half, Nichols wasn’t able to double his side’s advantage in the 40th minute as he headed high before the Sky Blues were unlucky not to have a penalty awarded soon after when Milos Ninkovic was brought down by Terry Antonis.

With the half almost up Jack Clisby almost snuck in a second for the Wanderers only for Sydney FC to clear his speculative effort to the far post off the line.

After the break, Western Sydney again went close to doubling their lead when Nichols charged into the box only for Michael Zullo to clear the danger before the number six could get a shot away.

Approaching the hour mark, a temporarily lacklustre Sydney FC rediscovered their threat with Clisby somehow hooking a cross away from a waiting Bernie Ibini before Bobo headed wide from the far post amid appeals for a handball.

With the match on the line Vukovic somehow denied Sotirio in the 80th minute with a superb reflex save before Janjetovic did even better a minute later to deny Bobo in a one-on-one in the box.

In injury time, the Sky Blues would have a penalty appeal turned down as their undefeated run came to an end at the hands of their biggest rivals.

A dramatic and down right absorbing game of football seeing the Wanderers end their derby drought and strengthen their spot in the six.
