Newcastle Jets managed to hold on for a slender 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar thanks to an early Jason Hoffman goal which sealed all three points for the home side at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night.
Newcastle made just one enforced change heading into the encounter after Joe Champness’ call up to the Australian under-23 squad which meant a surprise inclusion for Devante Clut who was chosen over new fan favourite Patricio Rodriguez.
Brisbane on the other hand gave a start to a number of youngsters in a raft of changes brought about following their 3-0 humiliation to Sydney FC on Monday.
After just 10 minutes the Jets made the most of their first opportunity when Jason Hoffman dinked the ball over the onrushing keeper following a lovely control and pass by Andrew Nabbout put the right back-cum-winger through on goal.
Newcastle asserted their dominance on the game following their goal and created a number of chances with Dimitri Petratos coming closest to making it two when his well struck free kick was acrobatically saved by Jamie Young five minutes before the interval.
Half time substitute Rodriguez showed off his skill with a mazy run down the wing and a lofted ball to the back post found Daniel Georgievski who controlled and volleyed only to be foiled again by a top draw Young save flying to his left.
Roar’s best chance of the game fell to an unlikely source in right-back Connor O’Toole who found himself unmarked and with a free header at the back post but blazed a poor effort well over the bar.
Glen Moss was called upon for the first time in the game as he clawed out an Ivan Franjic header low to his right after some zippy build up play by Eric Bautheac.
Brisbane were somehow creeping back into a game they should’ve been out of long ago.
The Jets pushed back 10 minutes from time for what proved to be the last chance of the match when after yet another Rodriguez cross, Nigel Boogaard’s unmarked header somehow managed to miss the goal and fellow centre-back Nikolai Topor Stanley who stood waiting for a tap in.
Newcastle will enjoy a week’s break before facing Wellington Phoenix at home while Roar will look to get out of their slump when they welcome Perth Glory on Thursday.
