Melbourne Victory cruise into top four

-

Melbourne Victory has leapfrogged Adelaide United on the table with a 3-0 win at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

The hosts recorded a comfortable win with a Taylor Regan own-goal, stellar free-kick by Leroy George and a Besart Berisha strike in a match that also included controversy from a Dzengis Cavusevic red card.

After 22 minutes Victory took a 1-0 lead through a mix up between Paul Izzo and Regan. James Troisi’s header across goal caught the Reds’ pair in two minds leaving Izzo unable to react and Regan to concede an own goal with his attempted clearance.

The home side doubled their advantage just under half an hour with a well-taken free-kick from George. The Dutchman bent it past a big wall to beat a stranded Izzo purely with the curve on the ball.

Coming on as a half-time substitute Adelaide’s Cavusevic had a very forgettable evening and lasted less than ten minutes following a red card during an exchange with Williams. An open hand slap by Cavusevic was spotted by referee Alex King and Adelaide’s striker was sent off.

It didn’t take long for Victory to capitalise as they extended the margin to 3-0. A well worked move started by Leigh Broxham ended with an unselfish George pass to Berisha who rounded Izzo to tap it in.

Adelaide endured a frustrating night where they couldn’t muster ample opportunities at goal and the red card will certainly complicate matters for Marco Kurz’ side in the next few weeks.
