A-League happy travellers

-

Winning at home keeps stands full and fans boisterous. However half a season’s work is done away from the support of the home crowd, and evidently some teams and players cope better than others with the challenges of travel.

How has each A-League club performed on the road this season?

Sydney FC have made Allianz Stadium a fortress this season with their eight wins and are yet to be defeated at the ground. They also boast the most impressive away record of any team and have only twice slipped up, once against the Central Coast in Round 6 and against Newcastle Jets in Round 22.

Surprisingly Melbourne Victory come closest to the Sky Blue’s impressive away record with their six wins outside of Etihad Stadium. In fact Kevin Muscat’s side have yielded better results while travelling: they’ve won just three home games this season and have been beaten on their own doorstep five times.

Newcastle Jets, Adelaide United and Melbourne City have won five away games each however the Jets sturdy record at Macdonald Jones Stadium ensures them an 11 point gap between third place.

Wellington Phoenix have endured a particularly gruelling 2017/18 campaign and have come away with just a single victory in their 12 trips to Australian shores. The Nix have conceded a whopping 25 goals while away, a statistic made all the more miserable considering their closest trip is 2,223km away.

Only Perth Glory have been dealt as many away losses, however Kenny Lowe’s men remain buoyant due to an admirable home record. Six wins within NIB Stadium gives Glory a higher number of home wins than every other team except Sydney FC and the Jets.

Which players have been the happiest travellers this season?

Bobo is tearing ahead in the golden boot race this season and 11 of his 22 goals have been scored during away games. The Brazilian earned his first career hat-trick in Wellington’s own backyard and has been particularly rampant during his trips to Melbourne, notching a brace past Lawrence Thomas at AAMI Park against Victory, and another past Dean Bouzanis at the same venue in the Melbourne City fixture.

Ross McCormack was prolific for Melbourne City with his 14 goals. The Scotsman obtained half of these during away matches and has been a sorely missed presence at the club since his departure.

Coming in just behind him in the goal-scoring rankings are marquee signings Adrian Mierzejewski and Oriol Riera who are currently matched on 12 goals each. Mierzejewski certainly relishes an away trip, his goal scoring rate outside of Allianz Stadium is currently 55.56% and the Polish midfielder is almost certainly set to increase his five away goals in the coming rounds.

Consistency has been key for Riera. The Spaniard has scored half his goals this season in away fixtures, contributing the greatest portion of Western Sydney Wanderers total 14 goals scored away from Spotless Stadium.

Andrew Nabbout was slowly creeping his way up the rankings but his A-League campaign will be cut short due to his shift into Japanese top flight football.  The winger found the back of the net four times in away fixtures, however despite leading the pack for Newcastle overall fellow teammate Roy O’Donovan was more successful on the road with his five goals.
