Chianese double sinks woeful Mariners

-

Joel Chianese scored his first goals of the season as Perth Glory earned a vital 3-1 win against Central Coast Mariners at nib Stadium on Saturday night.

Both sides were in desperate need of a result to claim a finals spot but in a high tempo, end to end game it was the home side who dominated the attacking play.

Chianese headed home the opener after being afforded time and space from a floated Neil Kilkenny corner inside the opening half hour.

Perth’s lead was doubled after Andy Keogh turned three Mariners defenders with a turn reminiscent of Hal Robson-Kanu in the 2016 Euros for Wales, before the Irishman’s left foot shot rebounded off the post for a simple tap in for Chianese.

Sloppy passes were a theme for both sides at times and it was a misplaced pass that enabled Connor Pain to tee up Andrew Hoole for a superb strike into the top corner for the Mariners.

Chris Harold had a somewhat controversial goal disallowed by the VAR after Keogh appeared to elbow Alan Baro in the build up to Joseph Mills cross which found Harold who headed home at the back post.

The match was sealed in fitting style when man-of-the-match Xavi Torres struck a stunning free kick over the wall and past Ben Kennedy to restore Perth’s two goal lead.

It was a familiar tale for the Mariners this season who toiled hard for little reward with basic defensive errors costing them at important stages of the match.

Meanwhile Glory’s late siege towards the finals will need to continue improving if they are to make any serious indentation to the league’s top sides.

The result leaves the Mariners second last on the ladder and nine points off a finals spot while Perth move to within a win of sixth place Adelaide United.
