High-flying Glory click back into gear

Perth Glory have returned to winning ways in style after a stylish and comprehensive 2-0 victory over Newcastle Jets at HBF Park on Sunday evening.

Glory wasted no time in shrugging off their two-game goalless run when Andy Keogh put the hosts ahead inside 20 minutes.

A perfectly weighted scooped ball from Neil Kilkenny found Diego Castro in behind the Jets defensive line, whose perfect touch and deft pass left Glen Moss in no-man’s-land, allowing Keogh to waltz into a vacant net and tap home the opening goal.

Ernie Merrick’s defence struggled to cope with the early pressure applied from Glory despite the experienced Nigel Boogaard returning to the starting line-up, resorting largely to clearing balls out from the back.

With the first half winding down Glory began to turn on the style, with Fabio Ferreira, Jason Davidson and Keogh all spurning good chances to double Glory’s lead.

After playing with fire in the first half Newcastle were made to pay dearly at the start of the second, when a Kilkenny wonder-strike rippled the back of the net.

Receiving the ball out wide Kilkenny drove to the left corner of the box, cutting inside on his right and whipping a curling effort which swerved around the diving Moss to nestle in the top right corner, doubling Glory’s lead in style.

Glory cranked up the heat on the Jets and as usual it was Castro lighting the fuse, with his Cruyff turn and saved shot in the box . A drive from distance by substitute Ivan Franjic which cannoned off the post got the crowd of 11,393 off their feet and the stadium rocking.

Unfortunately for the goal-hungry crowd the scoreline remained at 2-0 until full-time, with the hosts registering their third consecutive clean sheet in a convincing display which extended their gap to four points on top of the table.
