Duke continues to shine as Wanderers keep finals hopes alive

Markus Babbel was full of praise for Mitchell Duke after the forward scored his fourth goal in only seven matches for the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The latest goal came in the recent 3-0 win over Melbourne City which kept the red & black’s slim finals hopes alive.

The 28-year-old forward has managed to score in three matches in a row and Babbel claimed he is not shocked with how Duke has started life in his new colours.

“He’s the type of person that brings a sort of energy, he is always positive, always smiling, laughing, loving every training,” Babbel said.

“He wants to score goals and that’s what I said in the past, we don’t have many players who can score goals and want to score goals.

“He is one of these players so that is why I am not surprised.”

The Wanderers now sit 10 points off the top six with four matches left in the campaign.

Although their chances of sneaking into finals are marginal to say the least, the German manager firmly believes his squad responded in the right manner after their loss against the Wellington Phoenix.

“A win after Wellington was the most important thing,” Babbel explained.

“I said to the boys that I want to see structure in our game, I want to see a discipline on the pitch and I want to see energy. If we can bring this on the pitch then a result a result comes out.”

Though Babbel and his players are concentrated on trying to achieve finals football, that has not stopped the club in their pursuit for new talent next season.

“Of course we are working,” Babbel said.

“Everyone is looking for good players, although I think we will have a good team next season. I’m very optimistic, but at the moment I can’t tell you names because we haven’t signed them.”
