After failing to find the net last weekend, there were some questions about how long it would take Sydney FC’s newest signings to settle but their 4-1 win silenced those fears.
A week after their scoreless derby, the side scored four goals against the Newcastle Jets and Sky Blues’ coach Steve Corica said his team’s new signings – mainly Alex Baumjohann and Kosta Barbarouses – were beginning to find their rhythm.
“They were good last week and this week they were exceptional,” he said.
“When the goals don’t come you think what’s happening?”
Kiwi international Barbarouses said the combinations he was building with fellow striker Adam Le Fondre would develop into something dangerous in the coming weeks.
“He’s (Le Fondre) a great player with a lot of experience,” he said.
“We both work extremely hard for the team which is important.
“He wants a lot of goals himself but he’s actually quite unselfish too.”
At the other end of the field, there are some concerns being raised due to a notable absence of clean sheets this season.
Sydney’s defence has had a shakeup with the addition of former Socceroo Ryan McGowan, along with the injury to Michael Zullo, forcing a change at left-back with Joel King and Paulo Retre getting a chance at the position respectively.
Corica is not using this as an excuse and highlighted the importance of a solid defence in title-winning seasons.
“Everyone knows their job and they work extremely hard but we have been a little bit sloppy obviously conceding a couple of goals,” he said.
“We have a couple of new players into the system but it is improving.”
The lineup for the Sky Blues is attractive on paper. The Sydney faithful will hope they can turn potential into consistent performances for a strong campaign this season.
Sydney have a bye in the next round of the A-League but will face Melbourne Victory in two weeks in Kogarah.
