How does your side fare on the road?

A win away from home is crucial in any league, especially the A-League. Going to the opposition’s home, playing in their conditions and winning in front of their fans is incredibly valuable to good football sides.

Away days in Australia are particularly difficult for travelling teams. Players and staff travel by plane, rather than bus and the distance means that fans seldom travel with them.

The country is split into three time zones, and New Zealand adds a fourth. In fact, the A-League is the home of the second-longest domestic away trip in the world – Perth to Wellington and vice versa.

So how do our sides fare away from home? Who does it best?

The total points scored away from home by each team in every A-League season was taken, including historical clubs, to determine the best side away from home in the history of the league.

Points rather than wins were used to incorporate the value of an away draw and only regular-season games were included.

As expected, the original clubs lead the list with the extinct and new clubs bringing up the rear.

As far as aggregate numbers are concerned, Sydney FC have the most wins away from home in the history of the A-League. Of the founding A-League clubs, Perth Glory have the worst away record – they also have the longest away trips by distance of all clubs.

As well as winning the most number of away games, Sydney also have the equal most number of championships.

What happens if we remove the general success of a club as a variable? To do this we placed home wins alongside away wins.

Melbourne Victory have the most points at home in the history of the league followed by Sydney in second.

When taken as a ratio of away wins to home wins, Brisbane Roar are the travel kings. They have won just won less games away from home than at home and rounding means their ratio goes to 1.

Sydney maintains their position in the top two, pointing to their consistency and excellence on the road.

Perth have the biggest decrement of any original club, even less than Gold Coast United after their short history.

So, what is it that make Brisbane at good away from home as they are at Suncorp Stadium? The Ange Postecoglou era of dominance in the sunshine state has had a monumental impact on this.

In the four seasons between 2010 and 2014, Roar took 89 points from away games, the most of any club in three of those four years.

It can be concluded that Sydney are the best side away from home, but Brisbane must be recognised for the lowest drop of all sides from their performance at home to their performance away, and this had a significant impact on their most fruitful period.
