Sydney take their winning streak to 12 matches

-

Sydney FC scraped past Brisbane Roar in a sluggish 1-0 encounter to extend their unbeaten run to 12 matches.

The ball was fixated in midfield initially but the first chance went to the home side as Luke Brattan was teed-up on the edge of the area, forcing a save from Jamie Young.

Brisbane grew into the contest and nearly found the opener when Scott McDonald headed a Corey Brown cross into Andrew Redmayne.

Dylan Wenzell-Halls got the better of Joel King down the flank and forced another save from Redmayne.

Brisbane swiftly countered from a Sydney corner late in the half where James O’Shea curled his shot wide inside the box.

The match moved to the second half and Sydney won a penalty after Scott Neville handled the ball from an Adam Le Fondre shot.

The defender was given a second yellow card as a result. The Englishman scored the resulting spot-kick to make it 1-0.

Kosta Barbarouses won a penalty moments later off Brown but was ruled offside by VAR.

Brattan stung the palms of Young from distance and the goalkeeper blocked Le Fondre’s follow up shot in a superb double-save.

Brattan found Milos Ninkovic with a killer pass and the Serbian forced another save from Young.

Substitute Aaron Holloway had the chance to equalise late-on but put the ball over the bar one-on-one with Redmayne.

A last-minute cross into the box fell to Jacob Pepper who blasted it wide.

The result extends Sydney’s unbeaten run to 12 matches before they play Western Sydney at Jubilee Stadium next Saturday.

Brisbane will be looking to get back to winning ways at home against Adelaide United next round.
