Top A-League Players of All Time

-

The Australian A-League has grown to become one of the most viewed sporting leagues in the whole of Australia.

As many of you may already know, football is rapidly becoming part and parcel of Australian culture, with many claiming that it is now on a par with sports such as rugby and cricket. This simply wasn’t the case just a couple of decades ago, and football has really started to steal the hearts of sports fans all across Australia.

On that note, we figured it was about time to draw attention to some of the greatest players that we have seen in Australia’s A-League so far. There are four players that we feel have raised the bar above any other players to step onto an A-League field, and they really do deserve recognition. With that in mind, let us now dive into some of the best players and see what makes them so special.

Shane Smeltz

Having been born in Germany but raised in New Zealand, Smeltz is a bit of a mixture of cultures, and he added another one by coming to Australia to play in the A-League. The reason that Smeltz is listed as one of the greatest to ever play in the league is due to the sheer number of goals that he managed to score. As it happens, he is currently second in line for the greatest number of goals scored in the league, and it’s fair to say there was plenty of Aussie sports betting action on this guy during his playing days. Smeltz has since moved on from the league, but the performances he put in will not soon be forgotten.

Although Smeltz played for multiple teams in the Aussie A-League, his glory days definitely came during his time at Gold Coast United. Smeltz managed to rack up 42 goals during just a couple of seasons for this club, and he used to terrorize the defense of many teams involved in the A-League. Smeltz could certainly weave in and out of defenders and strike a good ball with both his left and right boot, and he certainly raised the level across the board in the league.

Besart Berisha

Berisha is the only man to have topped the scoring record of Smeltz above. At the time of writing, Berisha has scored more than 130 goals, which is a staggering 40+ more than Smeltz. And to make things all the more staggering, Berisha continues to play in the A-League today, and he seems to keep finding the net for his current club, Western United. It’s not just the number of goals scored that makes Berisha one of the best of all time either – it is also the number of trophies sitting in his cabinet.

Currently, Berisha has managed to win four A-League Championships, as well as two Premierships and one FFA Cup. This shows that not only is he able to score goals, but he’s able to do it at the big moments when required. This is likely why he is still picked by the manager for almost every game in the season, and we have a feeling that he will continue to put in remarkable displays for a few years to come. And if you are into sports betting, there are some pretty solid odds on how many goals he will ultimately score in his career!

Diego Castro

Players come from far and wide to compete in the A-League, and here we have Diego Castro who came over from Spain to participate. As far as European based players go, Castro is one of the greatest. He actually left the shores of Europe back in 2015 to come to the A-League, and he has played for Perth Glory ever since. It’s not like Castro was a spring chicken when he arrived either, as he didn’t start playing for Perth Glory until he was 33 years old. While some would say that this is the twilight of most players’ careers, Castro seems to have stepped up and thrived in his role as team captain.

He is certainly no stranger to scoring a flurry of goals either. In fact, he currently has more than 45 goals to his name, yet this isn’t what he is most known for. Due to his creativity, skill, and leadership, Castro won the Johnny Warren Medal following his debut season for the club. This is something that not many players can say!

Bruno Fornaroli

Last but not least, Bruno Fornaroli is also one of the top players to participate in the A-League. Unlike the other players we’ve mentioned where the sheer number of goals is what makes them one of the best, with Fornaroli, it is the regularity of goals he has scored that makes him such a valuable asset. Fornaroli played for many seasons at Melbourne City, and while he was there he actually won the Player of the Year award. While this in itself is quite an achievement, Fornaroli is obviously not content with what he has managed to do thus far.

These days, he enjoys playing alongside Diego Castro at Perth Glory. The pair are quite a duo as well, and they are arguably two of the most popular players among home fans in the entire A-League. As Long as Fornaroli stays fit and healthy, we expect to see him in the league for several years to come.
