Victory pick up first win moments before final whistle

-

Injury riddled Melbourne Victory managed a comeback moments before the final whistle to defeat Perth Glory 2-1 at AAMI Park.

The game began in a quick tempo, with both teams showing promising attacking intent.

Glory nearly took the lead early, but the ball went straight into Max Crocombe’s hands following a Ryan Shotton deflection.

Brandon Lauton was presented with a chance at the other end, but his shot inside the box went narrowly wide.

Jake Brimmer had another opportunity from a similar position right after, but Tando Velaphi’s reflexes kept the scores level.

A minute later, Bruno Fornaroli forced Crocombe to make a reflex save of his own.

Victory continued to mount pressure on Glory’s defence from the left flank. This time, with Robbie Kruse forcing Velpahi into action after Adama Traore’s cross.

The second-half continued much like the first, with Jacob Butterfield testing Velaphi from 20 metres out.

Not long after, Butterfield got involved by putting Brimmer one-on-one with the Glory keeper, but his left-footed shot produced no power.

Glory did not take long to respond, as Fornaroli opened the scoring 1-0 with an elementary header in the 62nd minute.

Kruse nearly found Victory’s equaliser just six minutes later, but his driven shot crept wide.

The home side continued to push and their goal finally came from Brimmer, after yet another Traore cross, marking his first ever A-League goal.

Minutes later, the game was completely turned on its head as Melbourne was awarded a penalty. Brimmer converted with no trouble to put his team in front 2-1 with only minutes to go.

The 2-1 win allows Victory to pick up their first points of the season, while Glory suffer back-to-back losses in Victoria.
