Brebner defends youth despite second half no-show

Melbourne Victory suffer their third consecutive loss after a 3-1 defeat to Adelaide United at a near-empty Marvel Stadium.

Despite Victory scoring first and looking promising to start the match, Adelaide cruised in the second half with Kusini Yengi scoring his debut A-League goal.

The teenager proceeded to taunt Victory fans with a Connor McGregor strut celebration, which Carl Veart believed was over the top.

“We need to keep him grounded.

“I’ll have a word with him after about that,” said the Adelaide coach.

However, the provocative celebration did not spark a reaction from Victory.

Instead, the home team proceeded to concede a third goal which gave Stefan Mauk his brace.

A lot of it was down to fitness, particularly evident by their star man – Callum McManaman.

Grant Brebner sang McManaman’s praise.

“It is his second 90 minutes for the season. We need to pursue, we need to continue, we need to make sure that he is continually getting those 90 minutes,” he said.

“Callum’s dropping out of games, but the more games he plays, the fitter he will get.”

With fresh injuries to Rudy Gestede and Aaron Anderson, the youth also failed to provide a meaningful second half spark off the bench.

Yet, Brebner said he remained confident in the young players at his disposal this season.

“The young players have done well,” he said.

“Our young players will continue to hopefully get better.”

With Ryan Shotton, Dylan Ryan, Nick Ansell and Aaron Anderson all potentially out for next week, Brebner may have to turn to youth once again.

It does not get any easier though, as Victory travel to face Sydney FC next Saturday night.
