A stunning header from the Brazilian talisman Bobô has given Sydney FC a share of the spoils against rivals Brisbane Roar at Dolphin Stadium.
The fast-paced match had the intensity of a rivalry, as both sides looked to impress their fan bases in the 1-1 stalemate.
An 18th minute goal from Dylan Wenzel-Halls gave Brisbane a 1-0 lead, his long-range shot resulted in an embarrassing error from Sydney’s goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne.
Sydney’s best chance in the first half came from a Kai Trewin mistake which went unpunished with the Roar’s captain Tom Aldred there to diffuse the situation.
The chances came thick and fast for both sides throughout the first half after having struggled in recent weeks.
Roar coach Warren Moon would have been pleased by the 1-0 lead at halftime and how his side played as they created chances and converted.
Steve Corica looked for impact off the bench after halftime by taking off Kosta Barbarouses and Patrick Wood for attacking threats in Dayvison De Silva (Bobô) and Jordan Swibel.
Jamie Young kept Brisbane’s lead intact early in the second half after his strong hand denied close range shots from both Ryan McGowan and Rhyan Grant in the space of five minutes.
Sydney were finally able to equalise in the 71st minute after a skilful header from Bobô beat the defiant Jamie Young.
The Roar had a chance to break the deadlock in the 84th minute after a header from Riku Danzaki ricocheted off the crossbar to the disbelief of the home crowd.
The final score ending 1-1 to the frustration of Sydney and Brisbane, who were both looking for a win to re-ignite their seasons.
