Alen Stajcic believes his Central Coast Mariners are the benchmark team in the A-League after they won their top of the table clash with Adelaide United.
The Mariners claimed a 2-1 victory in a match that had it all; VAR drama, penalties, penalty saves, long range goals and another Mariners comeback.
Central Coast had two penalties saved by young goalkeeper Joe Gauci and then conceded a goal just after half time. Stajcic was proud of how his team managed to put aside their misfortune and get the result to keep in first place.
“I thought we deserved the win, we played with an amazing amount of courage and resilience that I haven’t seen for a long time” said Stajcic.
Stajcic believes it is his team and not Melbourne City who are the benchmark team in the A-League.
“Melbourne City played some amazing football for a month, but you’re not the benchmark for a month’s football, you’re the benchmark for every game you play of the season”
“That’s why I said we are the benchmark, tonight we showed qualities and characteristics that you need to be at the top of the ladder and for that I’m really proud of the team”
With Adelaide and Melbourne both suffering defeats, the Mariners now find themselves four points clear at the top of the ladder and it would take Melbourne City winning both of their games in hand to knock them down to second.
