Top five Diamanti assists of the 2020/21 season

-

We examine one of the best players to play the round ball game on Australian shores. Western United’s Alessandro Diamanti loves the A-League, and we love him for giving us moments and memories like the ones we are about to relive.

Last season’s best player has dished up some of the most magical assists this year, so let us jump straight in and look at Diamanti’s top five assists of the 2020/21 season so far.

Opponent: Brisbane Roar, R12

Goal Scorer: Dylan Pierias

Our list kicks off with a beautiful piece of play from Western United. We have given the credit all over the field here, as we believe it’s a set play. Some may say Diamanti was going for Iker Guarrotxena in the box, however the Italian maestro simply does not miss targets by that much.

Instead, it was perfectly weighted for a late Dylan Pierias charge into the box. It works like clockwork at Pierias and his Roar opponent are the only ones who can influence the contest, such is the space Diamanti has put the ball into, and young Pierias makes no mistake in slotting it in.

This goal was the difference in the end for the Western win, and without Diamanti we would not have seen it.

Opponent: Central Coast Mariners, R7

Goal Scorer: Tomi Uskok

Next, we have got a gorgeous free kick from Diamanti that was just tailor-made for Tomi Uskok. From well outside the box, Diamanti hits it sweetly on the left to put it into an extremely dangerous position, and Uskok does the rest.

Despite Western going on to lose the game, the nature of this goal in the 4th minute to the ladder leader’s at the time highlights Diamanti’s sense of the big moment.

Opponent: Macarthur, R9

Goal Scorer: Dylan Pierias

This is a joy to watch, over and over again. Diamanti gathers in his own defensive half, but has the speed of mind to know what is going on further up field.

Launching a long through ball before Macarthur fully transition into defence, Diamanti captures their defence napping and his ball is perfectly weighted for Pierias to run onto and score.

The Italian’s ability to make it look so easy is what justifies this assist’s spot at number three on our list.

Opponent: Melbourne Victory, R10

Goal Scorer: Besart Berisha

Here is another that makes its way on to our list because of how easy Diamanti makes it look, not just for himself but for Berisha with what is the perfect ball.

Diamanti uses the dummy, then turns back inside and takes on the Victory defence. He gets past one, uses that silky left boot and puts it smack bang on Berisha’s head. Pure quality.

Western only go on to win this game by a solitary goal in one of the last kicks of the match, and Diamanti was critical in ensuring this result. However, his magic did not end there that night.

Opponent: Melbourne Victory, R10

Goal Scorer: Besart Berisha

Welcome to number one on our list. Words fail to do it justice, but we will give it our best shot.

Just five minutes after the previous Berisha goal, ‘Dia’ calls for it inside the box before switching and taking the ball towards the goal line. Realising he has a bit of time, he is able to create the perfect opportunity. By flicking it to give Berisha the perfect time to run, jump over the Victory defence and header it through.

There are few others in the A-League, if any, who could have manufactured a goal out of his position. Victory defence were well set and the difficulty level on the ball he plays is through the roof.

They say the greats make the arduous look easy. Well, ‘Dia’ makes it look beyond simple.

He is an incredible player that is a joy to have in the A-League.
