Melbourne Victory secured a 1-1 draw against Melbourne City in dramatic circumstances to get off the bottom of the table in their final match of the season.
Lleyton Brooks’ strike with the last touch of the game proved to be crucial in securing an upset result.
In what was also likely his final game in charge, caretaker coach Steve Kean felt like the draw was deserved.
“We feel we had enough clear-cut chances to at least get a point,” he said.
“We deserved a point.”
In particular, Kean was pleased with the goal-scorer Brooks, who turned the game around after coming on as a substitute.
“He always has to keep on thinking about his defensive side, but with the ball he can put his crosses in.
He can get one on one with people. He’s popped up with a good finish.
“He’s a good player, there’s no doubt about that,” said the caretaker coach.
At the other end of the field, it was Matt Acton’s heroics which kept City to only one goal. This was also recognised by Kean.
“For Matty [Acton], the good thing is that he’s a top professional. He trains like a man possessed every day,” he said.
“He kept us in the game with vital saves at vital times. He’s been great.”
With the A-League season now over, Victory’s focus turns to an FFA Cup play-off match with the Perth Glory. When that match will be played, is yet to be decided.
In the meantime, Victory would be hoping for a Newcastle Jets loss against City next week if they are to avoid finishing bottom.
