Dream return home for Central Coast Mariners

-

Central Coast Mariners have begun their home campaign with a 2-0 victory over Sydney FC at Central Coast Stadium on Sunday night.

Using their habitual width from the onset the Mariners kept Sydney’s defence constantly backtracking. Pressure built early for Sydney with a shot from Mariners skipper Oliver Bozanic deflecting the right upright. Sydney keeper Andrew Redmayne was forced to punch a powerful effort from Cy Goddard moments later.

Central Coast’s opportunities kept coming. A wonderful through-ball from Marcos Urena found Josh Nisbet one-on-one with Redmayne, who proceeded to send the ball into the atmosphere. Finally after some brilliant defending from their skipper, a Moresche through-ball found forward Marcos Urena for the game’s opener.

Only minutes later it was 2-0, a cross from Lewis Miller into traffic was sent into the net by Sydney defender Anthony Caceres, doubling the Mariners lead.

In the opening 25 minutes Sydney FC hadn’t had a single shot on goal. Their first came in the 26th minute through Adam Le Fondre, who struck the upright.

Frustration built for Sydney with Max Burgess shown a yellow just shy of the break. A brilliant save from Birighitti kept the scoreline at 2-0 entering half-time.

The second half commenced as the first begun with Central Coast maintaining possession. Stand-in forward Josh Nisbet proved tough to contend with, his small and speedy frame able to wizz past defenders with ease.

Sydney seemed to be their own worst enemies on the pitch, failing to execute simple passes. No matter how likely the Sky Blues looked in scoring they just couldn’t get their pieces right, and arguments among the team became common.

In the end Nick Montgomery’s men were just too good for Sydney FC.

Dominating around the park all night hints at Mariners having returned to their home ground intent on making it a fortress for the 2021/22 season.
