Sydney FC are yet to let up this A-League Women season, retaining their fifth consecutive clean sheet and fifth win from six games following their 4-0 demolition of Perth Glory on Saturday.
However, the three-time league champions believe that their best is yet to come this season, with players and coaches in unanimous agreement over the squad’s potential to improve on their near-perfect start.
The Sky Blues kept a visibly fatigued Glory side at bay for the afternoon, the latter competing in their third fixture in eight days, with the game all but decided with over an hour left to play courtesy of goals from Mackenzie Hawkesby and recently-capped Matildas Cortnee Vine and Remy Siemsen.
After netting her fourth goal for the season inside the half-hour mark, Siemsen said that the Sky Blues could have added more to their tally during a post-match interview.
“It was a great team effort today,” she said. “Nine goals in two weeks, you’ve got to be happy with that and I think there were definitely more goals in us.”
Similarly, Sydney FC coach Ante Juric expressed delight for his team’s overall showing, but directed most of his praise towards their first-half performance.
“I think we showed a good performance, especially in the first half,” he said.
The comments came after the head coach voiced his displeasure for his side’s second-half showing against Wellington Phoenix from the previous week.
“I would have liked to have seen a full game performance,” he said after the Phoenix game. “In the second-half we also could have been better and that’s why the score stayed the same.”
“We aren’t close to our best,” he continued. “We are about 60 per cent and we haven’t been outstanding yet.”
Juric’s reservations aside, the goals have been flying in every which way for the league leaders, producing 17 goals without having reached the midway point of the ALW season.
Despite losing star forwards Vine and Siemsen to international duty over the coming weeks, the Sky Blues will still boast the attacking threats of Princess Ibini, Chilean veteran Maria Rojas, as well as midfielder Hawkesby, who currently leads the club’s goalscoring.
Teenage defender Charlize Rule has also remarkably added two goals to the side’s overall tally, after a sensational header put the Sydneysiders four goals up inside the opening minutes of the second half.
Juric will undoubtedly be hoping for more of the same from his team when they take on Canberra United in an A-Leagues double header next Saturday.
The Glory, on the other hand, have a well-deserved eight-day break before facing Newcastle Jets next Sunday night.
