Jets salvage draw with top contenders Macarthur

-

There were 28 shots, four goals and six yellow cards as Newcastle Jets and Macarthur FC walked away with a 2-2 draw, a mere two days after both of their last games.

In another must-win game for Newcastle, the men in gold came out firing with the first opportunity of the game going to Samuel Silvera with a shot that went wide but afforded the home side a corner.

The visitors were not on the back foot, however, as the Bulls took their chances and began their attacking tirade.

Olivier Boumal looked sure to open the scoring for Newcastle in the ninth minute but his shot was smothered by Filip Kurto.

The first yellow card of the game went to Macarthur’s Tomislav Uskok for a challenge on Daniel Penha, affording the home side a free kick.

The intensity of the game continued throughout the first half with Newcastle getting themselves plenty of opportunities but they were unable to convert them into goals.

It did not take long for the Bulls to enter the contest, with their first shot at goal opening the scoring. From a Craig Noone corner, Uskok’s header found the back of the net to make it 1-0.

A penalty to Newcastle awarded the home side their first goal of the night. After a handball call against Lachlan Rose, Beka Mikeltadze tied things up with his penalty shot finding the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Silvera looked sure to make it 2-1 just before half time until it hit the post, denying a second goal for the home side.

After an action packed first half, both teams went into the break all tied up at 1-1.

Both teams came out all guns blazing into the second half with plenty of chances for each side appearing early.

After what appeared to be a critical save from Jack Duncan, Macarthur went again with a long shot from Tommy Oar finding the back of the net to make it 2-1.

With Newcastle struggling to get the ball out of their own half, the Bulls continued to dominate the second half.

The home side were not bowing out just yet though. After being subbed on just a minute prior, Eli Bablj found the back of the net for the first time in nine years to bring it back level at 2-2.

The Jets looked to have got one up on the visitors at the beginning of four minutes stoppage time, however, Babalj’s goal was ruled offside.

At the blow of the full-time whistle, Newcastle and Macarthur took a point each with a final score of 2-2.
