Unfortunately, in the world of football, injuries are all too common and something most players can’t avoid at some point in their careers.

Some injuries are manageable with one to two weeks of recovery and others have the power to rule players out long term.

Here are a few of the worst injuries the A-League Men has seen over the years…

Vargas, a Venezuelan international, was stretchered off the field following what at first seemed a fairly minor incident with Brisbane Roar’s Matt McKay in the 2017/18 A-League Men season.

The Newcastle Jets forward’s leg became trapped beneath him, breaking his tibia and fibula as well as dislocating his ankle.

Vargas’ bone had come through his sock, according to sideline commentators. McKay asked for medical help as soon as it happened, while interested teammates moved away once they witnessed the magnitude of the damage.

Jake Adelson

Jake Adelson, a winger for the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League Men, had a horro run of luck, with news that the then 20-year-old ruptured his ACL for the second time in a year in 2016.

Adelson had just recently returned from his first knee injury, which he had sustained a year before.

Less than two weeks later, during a pre-season friendly loss to Wellington ahead of the 2016/17 season, the former Western Sydney youth player was carried off on a stretcher.

Adelson unfortunately missed the season to come after scans revealed his need for a knee reconstruction.

Jordan Elsey was injured for virtually the entire 2014/15 A-League Men season while contracted to Adelaide United.

Elsey tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, putting him out for a year.

The previous year, the then 22-year-old sustained the same injury before returning to duty during Adelaide’s ALM title-winning season.

Wellington Phoenix full-back, Fenton, suffered a compound fracture in his foot during a game against Newcastle in the 2019-20 A-League Men season.

After taking of his boot, two holes where the bone had come through and broken his skin were visible.

After completing surgery that saw metal plates being inserted into his foot, a series of gruesome complications saw him hospitalised for over a month.

This injury to Bowles occurred after a collision with a Melbourne City player in the 2017/18 A-League Men season.

The Brisbane Roar centre-back suffered a rupture to his right anterior ACL and had some associated damage to surrounding cartilage.

Surgery was needed and rehabilitation and recovery ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
