It would be fair to say that Newcastle Jets don’t exactly have a reputation for being league leaders, however, they still have some impressive wins under their belt.
Whether it be for the edge-of-your-seat finishes, the importance for their season standing, or the sheer dominance they showed, and number of goals scored, there are several victories that remain at the forefront of fans’ minds.
Below is a list of the top five biggest victories Newcastle Jets have experienced in the A-League Men.
5. Western Sydney Wanderers 1 – 5 Newcastle Jets, Round 17 2018/19
This win remains memorable for Jets fans not only because of the high number of goals scored, but because Newcastle had the game wrapped up within the first 50 minutes.
Dimitri Petratos opened the scoring with a thundering strike after just 18 minutes, with Jason Hoffman making it 2-0 just four minutes later. Roy O’Donovan then made it 3-0 with a rebound penalty at the stroke of half-time.
Whilst the hope of a comeback for the Wanderers was looking unlikely, it was completely dashed early in the second half when Matt Ridenton found the back of the net. O’Donovan rounded out the five goals after scoring a penalty to make it 5-0.
A last-ditch effort from Mitchell Duke in the 69th minute was too little too late with Newcastle claiming the 5-1 victory.
4. Central Coast Mariners 1 – 5 Newcastle Jets, Round 1 2017/18
Everyone loves a classic F3 Derby, especially in a season’s opening round. This one, however, is one I’m sure Mariners fans would rather forget.
The home side were the first to strike after just five minutes, with Asdrubal Hernandez finding the back of the net to make it 1-0. However, this was the first and last goal the opposition would be scoring on this night.
It didn’t take long for O’Donovan to equalise for Newcastle, scoring just a few minutes later to make it 1-1. The Irishman continued his tirade on his old club, scoring two more goals in the first half, becoming just one of five Jets at the time to score a hat-trick.
Joey Champness and Petratos also found the back of the net to make it 5-1 to Newcastle.
3. Newcastle Jets 5 – 0 Wellington Phoenix, Round 24 2013/14
In a disappointing season where the Jets narrowly missed finals, this night at home in the autumn of 2014, offered the team and their fans a moment of reprieve.
The first to score was Emile Heskey to give the home side an early lead. Next came Joel Griffiths, before young star, Adam Taggart, scored a double to make it 4-0. Taggart’s double on this night helped him on his way to receiving the league’s Golden Boot and Young Player of the Year award.
The icing on the cake of the 5-0 win came from Englishmen Michael Bridges, who finished the game with a tremendous volley and earned the Jets their third highest win ever.
2. Brisbane Roar 1 – 6 Newcastle Jets, Round 26 2018/19
In a season in which Newcastle scored 46 goals, six of them game in their Round 26 win against Brisbane Roar.
Champness opened the scoring, finding the back of the net after a deflected shot before O’Donovan got a second. Going into the break 2-0, it was still anyone’s game.
The second half began and the hosts managed to get one back through Zac Duncan, but the visitors were only just getting started.
O’Donovan turned the game back in Newcastle’s favour to score a header just five minutes later to make it 3-1.
The Jets then managed to score a fourth before Champness scored his second for the team’s fifth. Kwabena Appiah put the icing on the cake, scoring with a one-on-one strike to make it 6-1.
1. Central Coast Mariners 2 – 8 Newcastle Jets, Round 27 2017/18
In an F3 Derby for the ages, Newcastle Jets got their greatest ever victory when they took over the Central Coast in Round 27 of the 2017/18 season.
The visitors came out firing from the start with Champness opening the scoring after just 10 minutes with a great individual run.
Champness’ opener was followed by two quick goals – one to O’Donovan and one to Riley McGree.
While the Mariners were able to find a way to get themselves back in the game, they were smothered by the visitors in the second half.
McGree got himself two more to seal a hat-trick, while Lachlan Jackson scored his first ever Jets goal. O’Donovan scored a penalty to get his second and Petratos got himself one to make it 8-2 by the blow of the full-time whistle.
The Jets finished their season on a high and this became a night that no Newcastle fan would ever forget.
