This is no joke. The A-League Men season is better to watch than the English Premier League.
You may be thinking how stupid I sound making such a comment, but I stand by it. Here are my thoughts on why the A-League Men’s competition is a level above the English Premier League.
1. There’s less games
Even though we as football fans absolutely thrive on the several football games we watch, it does get overloading with so many games to try keep up with. The A-League Men has 26 rounds while the English Premier League has 36, that’s 10 less games for fans to keep up with and it keeps the competition feeling fresher.
2. It’s not just a regular season
As I mentioned before, the A-League Men has less rounds and matches than the English Premier League. It sounds stupid that I am saying this, the more rounds the better right? You would be wrong.
The EPL only has 36 rounds and that’s it, no finals. Where you finish is where you finish. In the A-League Men if you make the top six out of 12 teams, you go into a finals series. You play in an elimination final if you finish third to sixth, then there’s the semi final where the top two ranked teams come into play and then the grand final. Easy to work out.
3. The quality and quantity of derbies
The derbies, you can’t beat them. Week in and week out of high quality football. There is at least one derby held every match week. From the F3 derby between Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets, the Melbourne derby between Victory and City, to the Sydney derby between Sydney and Western Sydney, and the long distance derby between Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix.
There are so many derbies held in an A-League Men season. In the EPL, the derbies only come around every few weeks and games that aren’t derbies are not big games therefore you don’t have much time to savour it. The ALM, at least you can move onto another derby straight away.
It’s entertainment week in, week out.
4. The marquee players
Yes, I know that the English Premier League is full of class. Starting from Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably one of the world’s greatest players to the Egyptian king Mohammed Salah and then the robot, otherwise known as Erling Haaland. The list just goes on.
The A-League Men also has class of its on. The promising young and up-and coming Aussie and Kiwi footballers, to the experienced, to the world class. The likes of Spanish legend David Villa, Australia’s greatest player Tim Cahill and one of Italy’s best Alessandro Del Piero have all played in the A-League Men.
While it sounds ridiculous that I am saying that the A-League Men has better players than the English Premier League, it’s somewhat true. These marquee players are all experienced and have success from their previous clubs.
While these players also play in the Premier League, the majority of them are up-and-comers or well known players to the world. They don’t have the success or experience that these star players in the A-League Men have.
Portuguese winger Nani is the league’s marquee man for 2022/23 having previously played for Manchester United and Portugal where he was part of their winning Euro 2016 side. He is currently suiting up for Melbourne Victory.
Another big player who is playing in the A-League Men this season is English striker Charlie Austin, who is known for his time at English Premier League side Southampton and his stint at English second-tier side West Bromwich Albion. He is currently his playing his trade for Brisbane Roar.
