Why Cristiano Ronaldo joining the A-League makes no sense

Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from Manchester United has made news across the globe, with everyone wondering where he will play next.

If you ask the bookies where he is going, predictions across the globe are very similar, with Sporting Lisbon, Chelsea and Bayern Munich as frontrunners currently. Other options include an MLS or Italian team, as well as PSG.

There are so many potential landing spots listed on these sports betting sites for the legendary player, but one league is not mentioned at all: the A-League.

This is because the thought of CR7 coming down under is ridiculous, right?

Many people believed that it was impossible, until Australian Professional Leagues CEO Danny Townsend said there was a chance last week.

“We’ve certainly registered our interest in bringing him to Australia,” Townsend told SportsFM 91.3.

“It’s obviously a long shot but we certainly have a proposition here in Australia for him to consider.”

This got many Australian fans excited for the possibility of one of the sport’s greats gracing the A-League. But it makes no sense for many reasons.

The first and most obvious reason is the money. Ronaldo was earning over $900,000 AUD a week at Manchester United.

Currently, the highest payed A-League player is Ronaldo’s former teammate Nani, who reportedly earns just $42,000 AUD a week at Melbourne Victory.

There is no chance that Ronaldo would take a $840,000 AUD pay cut per week to join the A-League when there are many other options that could give him the money he desires.

Another reason Aussie fans believe Ronaldo could move to Australia is the family connection he has in the country.

His grandparents have live in Perth, with the star’s relatives calling Western Australia their home for over 20 years now.

It would be nice to think that Ronaldo could join Perth Glory and lead them to their first A-League Championship, but they have already registered their five overseas players for the season so that’s impossible.

Many other clubs are in a similar boat too.

Although it would be awesome to see CR7 gracing an A-League shirt, it is just not realistic with other leagues having more money.

It doesn’t make sense for one of the game’s greatest to bow out in the A-League when there may still be a few chapters to be written in the book of Cristiano Ronaldo, in Europe or elsewhere.
