Although the Jets have kept their unwanted record of no clean sheets in this 2022/23 season so far, coach Ash Wilson says there are a few positives to take away from the 2-0 loss.

After succumbing to a fantastic long-range effort from Matilda Katrina Gorry in the first half, Wilson still had some positives to take away.

“We came in at half time and I was very positive with the girls, apart from the one shot that Gorry had,” she said.

Speaking on the progress being made in the team’s set up, she said: “Defensively from just being a little bit more compact I thought it was probably one of our more solid games. But again, two moments for me just put us on the backfoot and obviously we just needed to be a little bit better in the final third today.”

Although the run of form doesn’t look good on paper, with the team conceding 12 goals in their last three matches, there was a marked improvement in the Jets’ defensive structure in this recent match.

Centre-back Taren King believes the team has made the right steps to addressing the defensive issues that have been present so far this season.

“We changed up a few things at training this week, just working more on sitting in a block,” she said.

“[We’re] just trying to show teams wide when we can’t get into position to press, but it still needs a bit of work.”

The tactical tweaks did look like they made an impact, however, the narrative of the match could have been significantly different after a controversial moment in the first half.

Sarah Griffith was brought down in the box following a smoothly executed free-kick routine, but the referee waved it away.

“For me it’s a pen, but I’m not reffing the game,” the frustrated Jets coach stated.

The Jets will look to their next run of games to try and build on this improvement.
