There are reports that one of the A-League Men’s biggest marquee signings Charlie Austin will be leaving Brisbane Roar less than six months after joining.
The hype for Austin was immense before the season started and many believed he would set the league alight.
He has scored four goals in 10 matches for the Roar. His early departure after less than half a season makes him the worst A-League Men marquee signing of all time.
When you think of some of the worst marquee signings, the likes of Gallas, Del Piero and Honda come to mind.
The difference between Austin and those players is that they at least played a season out before giving up. It has taken the English striker only a few months to leave.
Charlie Austin was brought to the Brisbane Roar to make them one of the best attacking sides in the competition. At the time of writing, they have the worst attack in the league, having scored only five goals.
As a marquee signing, Austin was also tipped to bring big crowds to Brisbane Roar matches. However, this also hasn’t happened, with the side having an average attendance of just over 6,000.
The one positive was that at least Charlie Austin would be in Australia playing for the Roar for two seasons, right?
That was the intention. But reports suggest that Austin is struggling with homesickness and will be returning to England in the January transfer window.
Roar fans started to believe in finals for this season and possibly a title in the next two years, but they ended up getting him for just 10 games and sit close to bottom yet again.
His performances on the pitch have been average at best, with the team not improving during his tenure at the club.
In my opinion, his early departure and lack of overall performance make him the worst A-League Men marquee signing in history.
