The clash between Glory and Victory in WA on Saturday night was reduced to a 10-man battle in the 51st minute after a scuffle on the ground between the two players.
Originally referee Stephen Lucas delivered a red card to Clisby and a yellow to Ikonomidis after it appeared Clisby had shoved and grabbed his opponent by the throat following a tackle.
After going to VAR, the decision was rescinded as Ikonimidis was shown to deliberately kick Clisby in the shoulder on the ground before the Glory midfielder retaliated.
Both players were sent off for violent conduct and could face a three-match ban, something the coaches of both sides could do without.
Melbourne Victory head coach Tony Popovic didn’t have much to say about the incident but was disappointed with his side’s 3-1 defeat.
“It was out of character for both players. Obviously, they were tussling, and they both got a red card,” he said.
“They both got a red so they’ve obviously done something they shouldn’t have done.”
Meanwhile, Perth Glory head coach Ruben Zadkovich said he didn’t see the incident; however Clisby’s suspension will be a massive loss to the side in the coming weeks.
“I didn’t actually see the incident and I haven’t watched it back yet so it’s hard for me to pass comment,” the Glory coach said.
“All I’ll say is I spoke to my player, and he said Ikonomidis lashed out and kicked him in the chest or tried to kick him in the chest and Clisby reacted and pushed him.
“Losing one of our starting players, it certainly does affect our plans but we have been very focused on making it a collective and the people that are behind the ones that are starting know their jobs.
“I think over this period, this run of home games you’ve seen a lot of bodies come on at different times in different positions and they are executing well so that’s a nice positive for us.
”
Both Zadkovich and Popovic will be looking at their bench to find a replacement for each player when they face Wellington Phoenix and Sydney FC next week, respectively.
