‘It’s frustrating’: Jets concede early again as issues continue

-

Newcastle Jets have yet again conceded in the opening minutes of a match, this time letting in three goals in the first seven minutes against Sydney FC.

This marks the fourth game out of the previous five where the Jets have conceded in the first 10 minutes of a game. They are slow to get out of the gates, and are currently paying the price for their sluggish starts.

Taking away the opening period of chaos, Newcastle looked comfortably like the better side and on another day would’ve walked away with all three points. However, things didn’t pan out that way and Sydney ended up 4-2 winners.

Jet’s coach Ash Wilson put the flurry of goals down to the first mistake just seconds into the game, although it has been a pattern that has been seen in recent games.

“All of a sudden you’re on the back foot 30 seconds in against an elite team,” Wilson said.

“Within that six minutes it was a case of shock, lack of focus, and scrambling to get themselves calm again.”

Jets defender Cannon Clough echoes the statement from the coach and believes the team can bounce back for the upcoming games.

“We have a pattern of doing it to ourselves, so we’ve just got to clean it up a bit better,” she said.

“Resilience is one of our team words, so it’s hopefully instilled in everybody.”

After the chaotic opening minutes, Newcastle managed to finally get into the game. The third goal being conceded seemed to wake them up, and shortly after they grabbed their first. This gave them the much-needed confidence to start putting Sydney under pressure.

“Visually there was a lot of control there, particularly the second half,” Wilson said.

“I thought the girls came out well.

After coming out strong in the second half, Newcastle managed to get a second goal just three minutes in that put them right back into the contest. After some close chances at both ends, a Sydney penalty mid-way through the half took the wind out of the Jets’ sails.

“A penalty is never good to concede when you’re coming back like that”, said a frustrated Wilson.

“We definitely had a decent reaction, but it came too late.”

The first half performances will have to improve if Newcastle are to mount a challenge for a top four spot and a finals appearance, as the slow starts in matches are becoming a regular occurrence.

As the halfway point of the season draws near, there are fewer points on offer for the team down in 8th.

“Every game is crucial, that’s the mindset we have to take into everything moving forward.” Said Wilson.
