Week five of the Hyundai A-League provided a competition shakeup this past weekend, leaders Sydney FC knocked from their porch in a Big Blue shellacking.
Wins also for Wellington, Western Sydney and the Brisbane Roar saw only one draw in the round, with a very slow F3 derby between Newcastle and the Central Coast heating up late for a 1-1 final score.
As usual, social media was alight with opinion and armchair punditry throughout the round, and a quick trawl through the official match Hashtags provided one with an entertaining mix of referee disenchantment, player praise and general commenting about the match from those watching.
Wellington Phoenix 4 – 2 Adelaide United
With the #SavetheNix Campaign in full swing and Adelaide sitting bottom, Phoenix ploughed into the Top Six with a barnstorming win over Adelaide United and fans made comment on the nature of the opening few minutes.
Great start to this game…. it is like watching an under 6’s match! #WELvADL

And while the #SaveTheNix campaign had everyone aboard, it wasn’t such a pleasure for Adelaide fans supporting the campaign..
Hey hey hey hey woah woah I was all aboard the #SaveTheNix train but when you go smashing my team well mate it’s about time to disembark. — Adam Howard (@adamOsaussies) November 13, 2015
The Big Blue: Sydney FC 2 – 4 Melbourne Victory
A strong victory in a Grand Final rematch for Victory in Sydney and an absolute field day for Victory fans on Social Media, however many Sky Blue fans opted to look past the way they were outplayed and instead focus on the clear conspiracy surrounding referee Chris Beath.
Chris Beath has refereed #SydneyFC 25 times – the result? 15 Losses, 5 draws & 5 wins. That’s all the proof u need. Terrible bias. #SYDvMVC

Likely Victory fan and overjoyed Reddit user u/malbn instead found the hilarity in a loss for a Graham Arnold coached side;
A notable mention goes to the young Sydney fan who posted a video vowing revenge on the Victory for the Grand Final shellacking last season; however he quickly became Twitter’s running joke following another Melbourne heavy Big Blue. Screenshots of the fan abounded with captions ranging from “Hate to be this guy right now” all the way through to things that we probably shouldn’t post here. Regardless, we love his passion.
Imagine how this guy feels right now? #BigBlue pic.twitter.com/KzSqpDv8xR
