Roar and Wellington unable to break deadlock

-

It’s the fourth time in a row Brisbane Roar have drawn against Wellington Phoenix in a frustrating home fixture at Suncorp Stadium.

It took both teams a while to settle into the match, though a blown point blank chance in the 8th minute for Wellington’s Steven Taylor could be a contender for miss of the season.

While Brisbane retained the majority of possession, there were few clear cut chances fashioned by either team.

A 37th minute missed header by Adam Taggart, following an excellent set up from Connor O’Toole, represented Brisbane’s best chance of the half.

It was more of the same in the 2nd half, with Brisbane holding the lion’s share of possession.

A well organised Phoenix defence proved more than difficult to break down, however.

Eric Bautheac cut a frustrated figure for much of the match, his temper boiling over in a petulant 73rd minute display as he was yellow carded for unsporting behaviour.

Filip Kurto denied Brisbane one of their best scoring chances late in the 2nd half, saving a 90th minute strike from Alex Lopez.

There were few other takeaways from the match.

Questions will definitely be asked about Connor O’Toole’s inclusion in the starting line-up.

While his attacking qualities were valuable in this match, it cannot be denied his defensive inconsistency has been targeted by teams on multiple occasions.

Brisbane will be disappointed to take only a point in another match they were favourites to win.
