2-0 to Brisbane Roar.
A clean sheet, goals from Adam Taggart and impressive contributions from both Avram Papadopoulos and Connor O’Toole are all things to take away from the Roar’s Melbourne City matchup.
Not that the Brisbane faithful would care.
Saturday’s match meant one thing only: a win.
Finally.
“That’s what was important about tonight,” said Roar head coach John Aloisi post-match.
“We deserved to win the first few rounds – we didn’t – and we can’t change the past, but we were always going to win sooner later because of the football we’re playing.”
He added: “We worked… in preparing to beat Melbourne City and we believed we were going to win.”
“That’s why when they asked me if I was panicking, I said ‘no, no chance’.”
“We’ve got the side to do it.”
Benefiting from the absence of star Melbourne striker Bruno Fornaroli – apparently dropped by City head coach Warren Joyce because of fitness issues – Brisbane’s performance nevertheless merited the result.
With two upcoming away fixtures booked against Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets, it remains to be seen if Brisbane’s winning form can survive on the road.
Aloisi certainly thinks so.
“We’re a good team away from home, we showed that last week when we played against the Wanderers in Mudgee.
“From two goals down – after that we dominated, were the better side and got back to 2-2.
“That gave us the confidence to play and win tonight but also that away from home we can play just as well.”
