Brisbane snatch draw in frustrating night for Jets

-

Brisbane Roar were able to come back from behind with a late Éric Bauthéac header to earn a valuable point against Newcastle in their 2-2 draw at McDonald Jones Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Jets hit the ground running immediately when Dimi Petratos opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Brisbane defender Jacob Pepper gifted Petratos the ball on the edge of the 18 yard box, who made the most of the opportunity when he effortlessly took it past two defenders and calmly slotted it past Jamie Young.

Petratos almost grabbed his second with a free kick from 25 yards, but was denied by the post. Dimi then turned provider, knocking a pass over the Brisbane defence line into the path of Jason Hoffman, who forced an outstanding save from Jamie Young.

Aside from a decent ranged effort from Alejandro Lopez Sanchez and a penalty shout for a potential Nikolai Topor-Stanley handball, Brisbane never really looked like bouncing back in the first half.

The Jets would’ve been disappointed to only be heading into the sheds at half time as one goal leaders.

The Jets paid the price for a drop in intensity in the second half when Adam Taggart scored his record-breaking 18th goal at McDonald Jones Stadium, overtaking Joel Griffiths. Connor O’Toole played a simple ball across the box to Taggart who was in the right place at the right time to tap in the equaliser.

Minutes later, Roy O’Donovan latched onto a loose ball in the box following a lengthy goal-mouth scramble and promptly restored Newcastle’s lead.

The final stage of the game was the most tense and hotly contested period of the game as Brisbane did everything to spoil the evening.

In the 86th minute, Brisbane were able to do just that when Eric Bautheac nodded home a header on the far post.

Brisbane came close to snatching the win on a few occasions, but in the end the teams shared the spoils in what was a frustrating night for the Jets, and a valuable point for Brisbane.
