Jets defeat Melbourne City with a heavily rotated squad

-

The Newcastle Jets made a statement with their 3-1 win over Melbourne City on Friday night at McDonald Jones Stadium. Ernie Merrick made seven changes to the starting 11, but the squad players proved to be more than useful in a famous win.

The first significant chance fell to Jair at the 20 minute mark, when he tested Eugene Galekovic with a volleyed effort after Melbourne City failed to properly defend a cross. Shortly after, Johnny Koutroumbis found Jair again on the back post, and the Brazilian finished emphatically with a header giving the Jets an early lead.

City responded with a handful of half-chances and attacking moves, but again were unable to threaten Newcastle’s box in a meaningful way. Their biggest chance came just before half time when the ball fell to Jamie Maclaren in the six yard box. Maclaren got some contact on the end of a bouncing ball, but Lewis Italiano was able to save it comfortably.

The heavily rotated Jets side headed into the sheds full of confidence at half time with a 1-0 lead.

City didn’t take long to work their way back into the game in the second half.

A seemingly hopeful low cross through a sea of legs found its way to Jamie Maclaren on the back post who made no mistake from close range. City lifted after their equaliser and began to trouble the Jets with their passing in the front third.

After a tense and hotly contested 20 minute period, a quick Jets counter attack found Joey Champness one-on-one with Galekovic and he calmly rolled it home giving Newcastle the lead.

Soon after, Roy O’Donovan was on the end of a similar counter attack and deftly stroked it into the bottom right corner with his left foot, extending Newcastle’s lead on the 80 minute mark.

City were unable to recover from this shocking one-two punch, and the Jets made a massive statement in their push for the top six.
