Newcastle and Adelaide draw blank in dour Hunter stalemate

-

In what was talked up to be an important game with regards to A-League finals qualification, the Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United both looked completely uninspired in their 0-0 draw at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a dry affair to say the least. Neither goalkeeper was required to make a save in the opening 45 minutes. Adelaide started on the front foot and appeared to be the team more likely to score in the opening ten.

Ivan Vujica created the best chance for Newcastle in the 29th minute when he whipped in a delicious cross that landed in the six yard box just beyond the reach of Kaine Sheppard and Roy O’Donovan.

For Adelaide, Craig Goodwin struck the crossbar after he evaded Nigel Boogaard’s sliding challenge during a counter-attack on the left wing just before half time. Both teams headed into the sheds scoreless in dire need of inspiration.

The second half continued in the same vein. Neither team took initiative and lacked the ability on the day to create chances of any real quality. Both defences were rock solid, and the game had 0-0 written all over it from quite early on.

The Jets had a new lease of life in attack when Joey Champness came on off the bench. He provided some additional energy and pace to Newcastle’s attacks, and was at the forefront of a number of Jets counter attacks late into the second half.

Newcastle had the biggest chance in the final minutes, when Lachlan Jackson delivered a dangerous cross for Roy O’Donovan who misjudged the flight of the ball completely as it whiffed past his headed attempt.

In the end, the defences reigned supreme neither team was able to snatch the win.
