Oar reflects on new responsibility as Mariners captain

-

Tommy Oar says he’ll do whatever he can to make the Mariners a success this season after being handed the captaincy for the club’s first two A-League games.

With a full pre-season and two 90 minute performances under his belt, Oar is close to showing the ability that saw him a move to Europe nine years ago.

The midfielder enjoyed a dream return to the squad in round one as Alen Stajcic awarded the 27-year-old the Mariners’ captaincy in Matt Simon’s absence. Oar was again handed the armband for the F3 Derby, an honor in which he has taken great pride.

“It is obviously a nice recognition from the gaffer to give me such an important role in the team with Matty Simon suspended for the first game and on the bench for the second.”

“All the older and experienced boys put a bit more pressure on themselves to try and be a leader in the team,” he said.

Oar says he owes his rise to the captaincy to his coach, who has demanded the former Socceroo be a more vocal influence on the pitch and use his experience wisely.

“It is about being a leader and helping to drive the team. I’m probably not the biggest talker on the pitch and that’s something he has helped me with.

“That is something he is constantly discussing with me, to try and be more of a leader in the team and help guide the younger talent we have within the squad,” he said.

He hopes his good start to the season can continue,  and says he’ll do anything to help the Mariners as they look to rebuild in 2019.

“I just want to do whatever I can for the team to help us be successful this season. Whatever role is asked of me, I’ll do it to the best of my ability.

“If the Mariners have a good season then I have had a good season, that’s the way I am looking at it,” he said.
