Wanderers continue their winning streak

-

Western Sydney Wanderers continued their winning streak against Melbourne Victory to take home the three points in a 2-1 win at Marvel Stadium.

After wasted opportunities in the first half, the sides took their chances in the second but it was the visitors remaining strong to take the win in Victoria after 11 previous defeats in the state.

Ola Toivonen gave sighting of an early opportunity for Victory, receiving a cross from Andrew Nabbout but the header attempt proved off-target.

Wanderers’ goalkeeper Daniel Lopar was put to work early as Elvis Kamsoba took a shot before Lopar tapped the ball over the crossbar.

The quiet opening almost came to an end as a cross from Nabbout was deflected, narrowly missing a sneak in goal.

A booking for Leigh Broxham set up an opportunity for the Wanderers to score, with the visitors attempt proving unlucky as Matthew Jurman’s header struck the bar.

A quick follow up from Alexander Meier looked to have put the Wanderers on the board but the shot was blocked, going down as another wasted opportunity.

Kamsoba was denied his maiden goal for the second week in a row, providing a big opportunity for Victory but the strike was saved by Lopar.

Daniel Georgievski assisted brilliantly to set up a big chance for Meier to score but he headed the ball off-target, ensuring both teams remained goalless into the break.

A corner to start the second half for the Wanderers set up the attempt for Mohamed Adam who tried to finish up with a bicycle kick. In the process, he connected with the face of Nabbout and was booked for the incident.

The breakthrough the Wanderers were looking in the 54′ came when Keanu Baccus struck the ball from just outside the square taking the lead to 1-0.

The visitors made it 2-0 in the 62’ as Victory’s Storm Roux and Lawrence Thomas found themselves in a mix-up for the ball in defence, allowing Meier to double the lead.

A penalty in the 71’ worked in Victory’s favour as captain Toivonen stepped up halving the deficit for the home side as he converted from the spot.

A burst of speed from Kamsoba took the ball down to Victory’s attacking side, the pass to Nabbout set up for a fairy-telling ending but he could not take control of the ball and failed to convert.

A chance for Toivonen to equalise for Victory again fell short as the shot was off-target.

With five minutes of extra time given, the Wanderers held onto their lead as Victory turned up the energy and fought for the equaliser.

The Wanderers proved to be the stronger team on the night, holding on to their lead 2-1 to keeping Victory winless this season, in what turned out to be a thrilling second half of football.
