A card-filled dead-lock in Melbourne

-

Frustration from the referee’s decisions and a straight red card was amongst the action as Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix drew 0-0.

Phoenix began with a shot in the opening minute, following a chance from Jaushua Sotirio deflected by Lawrence Thomas.

Opportunity for Victory followed as a string of play between Migjen Basha and Ola Toivonen saw the ball land in the feet of Robbie Kruse who fell short with hesitation.

Then came Toivonen who had the whole crowd thinking he found the net, but Stefan Marinovic saved the volley easily.

Tension rose in the 30th minute between the sides as a knock to Kruse was not awarded a free kick.

Phoenix made their way up field to only have James Donachie be given a yellow card for a foul on the ball which stirred the side.

In the midst of the confrontation, Matti Steinmann was also shown a yellow card for remonstrating.

Kristijan Dobras attempted to curl the ball past Marinovic but found the post just before added time.

The two minutes added still kept the sides 0-0 going into the break.

Dobras opened up the second half with a yellow card after a late challenge on Cameron Devlin.

Phoenix were unlucky not to score in the 52nd minute when Luke De Vere’s header bounced down off the crossbar, staying outside the line and sending the Victory defence into a scramble.

Dobras in the 60th minute then received a straight red card after a high boot on Devlin, downing Victory to ten men for the remainder of the match.

The free kick following the card was taken by Reno Piscopo just outside the box but his attempt went over the bar.

Within four minutes at the 73rd minute, three yellow cards were given, to Andrew Nabbout for physically displaying his frustration, followed by Sotirio and Toivonen.

Add another two yellow cards to Leigh Broxham and Jakob Poulsen.

It was a hurry to find a goal within the five minutes of added time with no luck to either side, concluding the game 0-0.
