Carlos Salvachua has been appointed care-taker coach for the remainder of the 2019/20 A-League season.

The announcement was made public on Wednesday 14 January, with the statement confirming assistant coach Filip Tapalovic has also been made aware his time at Victory will come to a conclusion.

In a press conference held by the club on Wednesday, Victory Chairman, Anthony Di Pietro, who was joined by CEO Trent Jacobs and Salvachua, explained that the club’s performances in 2019/20 have not been meeting expectations.

“It’s based on performance and results,” Di Pietro said.

“It hasn’t been a rash decision; it’s based on facts.

Victory’s lowest performance was just last week with a 3-2 loss to the Central Coast Mariners which included the conceding of two penalties which ultimately cost the club the win, as well as Kurz being handed a red card for arguing with a referee.

Di Pietro continued to explain that the decision was not based solely on this performance, rather it was an evaluation of the entire season.

“We constantly reviewed performance and results,” Di Pietro said.

“Once you’ve made a decision that chance is necessary, then you do that out of respect for everybody.”

Di Pietro admitted that lessons have been learnt during Kurz’s time at the club and the process of appointing a new head coach for 2020/21 will be a lengthy one to ensure the right decision is made.

“We are going to take our time in the process of going forward,” Di Pietro said.

“We’ll take our time to review what we’ve learnt in the process of appointing a coach.”

Salvachua brings 20 years of international coaching experience to the club, in which he has spent his time coaching Real Madrid and C.D Guadalajara.

“Carlos is highly respected,” Di Pietro said.

“Under the leadership of Carlos, we believe our playing group can deliver on-field success this season.”

Di Pietro thanked both Kurz and Tapaovic for their service at the club, particularly noting that presenting Kurz with the news was not easy, and that the decision has been hard for everybody involved.

Kurz was appointed head coach in June 2019 and was given the difficult task of rebuilding the Victory squad.

In his 13 games at the club, he finishes with a 4-3-6 record.
