The Newcastle Jets’ relentless assault on goal was not enough to equalise with Macarthur Bulls, leaving them with another loss – this time 2-1 at McDonald Jones Stadium.
A deadlocked start to the game found Newcastle Jets and Macarthur FC transitioning in turn through the pitch.
However it would be the opportunist Frenchman Loic Puyo who would give the Bulls a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute after taking advantage of Nikolai Topor-Stanley’s deflection with a hook shot into the left-side net.
Valentino Yuel’s through ball gave Roy O’Donovan a breakaway chance with an impressive run through the attacking half. Angus Thurgate was on the receiving end of the Irishman’s cross yet the chance to equalise went amiss.
In the 16th minute, the Jets found their momentum with an apparent goal from Jason Hoffman, however VAR overturned the decision.
Matt Derbyshire took advantage of Newcastle’s disappointment with a superb goal on the nearside post, leaving the Jets trailing 2-0 in the 23rd minute.
Goalkeeper Adam Federici deflected a shot from O’Donovan and paved the way for Yuel to score his first ever A-League goal in the 41st minute.
The Bulls kickstarted the second half with a determined Rose trying to capitalise off a rebound in the box however, Jack Duncan was quick to make another save.
In the 54th minute, O’Donovan missed a chance to level out the game with an ambitious lob over the keeper.
The Jets continued to show their drive after an excellent challenge by Yuel in the midfield gave Ramy a chance to also make the scorecard. But his quick decision to cross saw the opportunity go to waste.
It was an unfortunate finish for the Newcastle Jets who dominated the second half.
Referee Ben Abraham’s controversial decision to reject appeals for Susnjar’s handball in the box within a critical final minute leaves the Jets dwindling at the bottom of the ladder with three straight defeats and no points to their name.
