Macarthur’s 1-0 defeat to Wellington Phoenix on Saturday night confirmed the side finished the season at the foot of the table. It was the Bulls’ 14th defeat of the 2022/23 season, earning just three wins since the turn of the year.
This season, the team have suffered some poor results, including a 6-1 defeat to premiers Melbourne City, two 4-0 defeats to Western Sydney Wanderers, and a 4-1 loss to Central Coast Mariners.
Sterjovski explained that improvement was needed all over the park but singled out the defensive record as a particular area of focus. Macarthur conceded 48 goals this season, which was the most out of any side in the competition.
The coach also emphasised the need for the team to use their possession more effectively, alluding to many games when the Bulls didn’t take their chances.
“It’s definitely been tough,” Sterjovski said.
“As well as we’ve done in some performances, there is a reason for where we’re sitting.
“We need to be better with the ball and make our possession count.”
However, Sterjovski said he remained confident the team would be a different proposition next season, believing the groundwork for a better campaign had been laid down. He also said that the team deserved more from this season, lamenting the side’s consistent concession of late goals in the final matches.
“I think we’re heading in the right direction with the players coming back from injury and building a stronger squad,” he said.
“We’ve put good structures in place.
I think the players have bought into what we want to do and how we want to play.
“With their effort alone and the desire [they deserved more]. There have been quite a few performances where we deserved a lot more, but it’s that story where we don’t put away our chances, and we’ve conceded some silly goals.”
After only recently signing a two-year contract extension himself, Sterjovski said he was looking to bring more players through the door for next season.
The club recently tied down star goalkeeper Filip Kurto for an additional year, but it remains to be seen how the rest of the squad will take shape for 2023/24.
