Adelaide’s relentless pressure downs the Jets

Adelaide United secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Newcastle Jets thanks to a well-placed strike from fan-favourite, Craig Goodwin.

Adelaide had a dream start to proceedings when Louis D’Arrigo pounced on an early error from the Jets defence and composed himself to score his first A-League goal.

Once the Reds had taken the lead inside the opening five minutes, Newcastle was keen to respond and nearly equalised when Steven Ugarkovic unleashed a remarkable 25-metre half-volley that rattled the top of the crossbar.

Newcastle’s attacking efforts were soon rewarded when Connor O’Toole finished off a great passing movement and scored from outside of the box to tie the game at 1-1.

Although they conceded a spectacular team goal, the Reds wanted to regain the lead instantly and nearly did so when Ben Halloran’s attempt from long-range hit the woodwork.

United continued piling pressure on Newcastle’s back-four until the end of the first half but were unable to break down the visitor’s defence.

Picking up where they left off, Adelaide began the second half with intensity and came close to scoring their second goal of the evening when Jack Duncan parried away Goodwin’s blistering strike.

Against the run of play, Newcastle came close to taking the lead when Apostolos Stamatelopoulos met a well placed corner with his head but was denied by the crossbar.

The Reds quickly responded with a chance on goal when Goodwin rocketed a free-kick into the left-hand goalpost.

Shortly after the narrow miss, Goodwin picked off a poor pass from Ugarkovic and put the Reds back into the lead with a perfectly placed shot into the bottom right corner.

Newcastle had an excellent opportunity to equalise when Ugarkovic stood over a late free-kick.

Unfortunately for his side, the Jets playmaker was unable to put his shot on target.

On a sour note for the Reds, young superstar Mohammed Toure went down with a potential hamstring injury late in the contest and could miss some time on the field.

United picked up their third consecutive victory and rise to third, while the Jets remain in tenth place on the ladder.
