Macarthur FC down Adelaide United for first win of 2022/23

-

Macarthur FC have earned their first win of the 2022/23 A-League Men’s season with a 2-0 victory against Adelaide United on Sunday afternoon at Campbelltown Sports Stadium

The Bulls got off to a promising start, pinning United back in their half. Just five minutes in, Jonathan Aspropotamitis got his head to a wide free kick that Adelaide goalkeeper Joe Gauci pushed away. However, Macarthur were dealt a huge blow in the 12th minute with captain and talisman Ulises Davila taken off following a barrage of fouls.

Adelaide started to move up the pitch straight after the substitution with Louis D’Arrigo and George Blackwood both seeing efforts go close. Defender Benjamin Warland got on the end of a left-sided corner 15 minutes in, swivelling well at the back post, but his effort went over the bar.

The side should’ve been in front 11 minutes later with Craig Goodwin’s cutback from the left of the box finding Blackwood centrally who fired his shot straight at Filip Kurto.

Adelaide would be left to rue missed chances moments later. A turnover from the visitors allowed Lachlan Rose to roll the ball into the left channel for Daniel Arzani who side-footed an effort into the far-right corner. Macarthur took this lead into halftime.

Adelaide flew out of the blocks for the second half looking to restore parity early on. Hiroshi Ibusuki saw his headed goal ruled out for a foul before he missed from point-blank range seconds later.

Despite the spirited opening minutes to the second half, Adelaide found themselves two goals down just before the hour mark. Arzani wriggled his way to the byline in the left of the box before finding Rose who bundled it home from close range. Arzani carried on his creative ways for the Bulls seeing his free kick rattle the crossbar in the 60th minute.

Adelaide who are known for their late goals set their sights on another grandstand finish, but it just wouldn’t fall for United. Despite a plethora of chances for the away side, they just couldn’t find the finishing touches. A goal and an assist from both Arzani and Rose proved to be the decisive factor in Macarthur’s victory.

The result leaves United winless in their first two matches of the 2022/23 season. For Macarthur, it’s four points from a possible six to start the season.
