Perth Glory coach Ruben Zadkovich was left frustrated following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Macarthur FC on Sunday.
The Glory succumbed to their fifth defeat of the season, leaving Zadkovich’s side rock bottom of the A-League Men.
He gave insight into a conversation with opposing coach Dwight Yorke where the former Manchester United man admitted that Macarthur may have been lucky to escape with all three points.
“Dwight Yorke summed it up best with me – ‘We might have stolen one from you there’,” Zadkovich said.
“It’s frustrating not to get something from that game just purely based on the positive football we did play and the chances that we created and didn’t take.
“We threw away points today. Should’ve taken our chances and should’ve won the game. We were the better team.”
Yorke clarified his immediate post-game comments to Zadkovich, highlighting the improvement shown by the Bulls in the second half.
“I’m sure he will probably be disappointed because certainly, first half, they had a couple of good chances that maybe could’ve gone their way,” he said.
“I can understand his disappointment, but I felt overall performance that we might’ve just nicked it based on our second-half performance.”
Zadkovich lashed out at poor finishing and sleepy defending as key reasons for the result.
“The players know. They’re in the dressing room talking.
The ones who missed the chances are pissed off at themselves for missing those chances,” he said.
“In the first half, we played some of our best football of the year, and it would’ve been fair for us to be two or three up at halftime.
“At a minimum, we should be keeping a clean sheet in that game.
Macarthur have barely challenged in front of our goal.”
Irrespective of what might have been, a defeat means the Glory have won just two of their opening seven matches. Although rookie coach Zadkovich is hoping a stretch of home fixtures in the new year with see the side shoot up the table.
It will be an important game for Perth on Friday night, hosting Wellington Phoenix, who are in sixth. A victory for the side will push them within a point of the New Zealand-based team while still holding a game in hand on them.
